Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL
These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

The Dapol 21‑tonne hopper Simpson 78 is an OO‑scale model of a British Railways coal hopper. It is presented in a weathered finish and carries the Simpson livery. The model measures 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height, and is equipped with profiled wheels, NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings. It includes a load and a highly detailed, finely moulded body.

The prototype was a standard BR coal hopper derived from a 1930s LNER design. Over 23 000 of the all‑steel wagons were built between 01/01/1949 and 31/12/1958, serving until the early 1980s. They were introduced after nationalisation to meet the post‑war rise in coal demand, and many units were later modified and rebuilt.

This model represents the later welded design of the 21‑tonne hopper, with a minimum curve radius of 1. The Dapol part number is 4F‑034‑109 and the period depicted is the British Railways Early Crest era.
