Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

Dapol has released a new model of a ventilated van in LMS grey livery.

This OO gauge model features a four-wheel configuration and is built to NEM and tension lock coupling standards.

The model measures 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 48mm in height.

The van was built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway's (LMS) Wolverton works between 1935 and 1945.

This model represents the vehicles used during the Big Four era, a period of British railway history which spanned from the grouping of the railways in 1923 until the nationalisation of the railways in 1948.
