Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

Dapol's Ventilated Van model is based on those used by the LMS and GWR during the Big Four period. The model features a 4-wheel design and is constructed from a wooden body with a steel corrugated end on the LMS version and a traditionally planked end on the GWR version.

The model is 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 48mm in height, making it suitable for OO gauge layouts. The coupling is designed to the NEM standard with tension lock. The model is available in LMS grey livery.

The model features a number of details including profiled wheels and accurately applied livery. The body moulding is highly detailed and includes NEM pockets with self-centring couplings.

The Ventilated Van was a common sight on British railways, used to transport perishable goods during the early 20th century. The LMS version was built between 1935 and 1945 at Wolverton works. The model represents the period when the railways were still divided into four main companies: the LMS, LNER, GWR, and SR.
