Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

The Dapol model is typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

The Dapol 21 Ton Hopper Wagon is a model representing a British Rail coal hopper wagon. It has a length of 82mm, width of 33mm, and height of 40mm. This model is a representation of the later modified version of the 21t hopper, which was a welded design.

The real-life equivalent of this model was a standard coal hopper wagon introduced by British Rail in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Over 23,000 of these wagons were built between 1949 and 1958, and they remained in service until the early 1980s. The model features a highly detailed body, profiled wheels, and NEM pockets for self-centring couplings. It also comes complete with a load.
