Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

MODEL
These models are modelled on the GWR and LMS ventilated vans; the LMS version had a steel corrugated end, whilst the GWR was traditionally planked.

Dapol Ventilated Van BR Grey 183311 is a OO gauge model of a British Railways early‑crest ventilated van. The kit is supplied in the standard BR grey livery and incorporates NEM and tension‑lock couplings. The model has a four‑wheel under‑frame and is reproduced in the dimensions used by LMS Wolverton, the original builder of the prototype between 1935 and 1945. Dapol’s manufacturer part number for the kit is 4F‑011‑027.

Ventilated vans were the principal means of transporting perishable goods swiftly while keeping the cargo in optimum condition. Each of the four pre‑nationalisation railway companies produced its own design, typically a wooden body fitted with ventilators to allow a constant flow of fresh air. After nationalisation the vans continued in service until the 1960s, when longer vehicles with wider doors for pallet access replaced them. A number of original ventilated vans have been preserved.

The model is based on the GWR and LMS types, the LMS version featuring a steel corrugated end and the GWR version a traditional planked body. It includes profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings.

Overall dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height.
