Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

Dapol 21t Hopper NE 193275 is an OO gauge model of a coal hopper in LNER grey livery. The model measures 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height and can negotiate a minimum curve of radius 1. Its manufacturer part number is 4F-034-112 and it represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The real‑world hopper was introduced after nationalisation when British Railways inherited a large fleet of wagons and hoppers for coal transport. To meet the post‑war increase in coal demand, BR adopted a standard design based on a 1930s LNER all‑steel hopper. Over 23,000 of these wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and they remained in regular service until the early 1980s, with many units later modified or rebuilt due to heavy wear.
