Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast assortment of rolling stock designed to carry coal. As Britain rebuilt itself after WWII, the demand for coal soared and it was decided that a standard coal carrying vehicle was required to improve efficiency. The new standard was based on the 1930’s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these new standard wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued into service into the early 1980’s Due to the heavy wear and tear these wagons were subject to, many were modified and rebuilt.

Dapol 21 Ton Hopper – Sykes livery

The model measures 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height. It is supplied in a pristine finish and is equipped for OO gauge track. The minimum radius curve is listed as Radius 1. The manufacturer part number is 4F-034-013 and the model represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The prototype hopper wagon was introduced after nationalisation when British Railways required a standard coal‑carrying vehicle to meet post‑war demand. Based on a 1930s LNER design, the all‑steel wagons were built between 1949 and 1958, with more than 23,000 produced. They remained in service into the early 1980s and many were later modified or rebuilt due to heavy wear.

The Dapol model includes a finely moulded body, accurately applied Sykes livery and printed details, and is supplied with a load. It features profiled wheels, NEM pockets and self‑centring couplings.

All components are supplied ready for use on a standard OO gauge layout.
