Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL
These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

Dapol 21T Hopper Simpson 78 is a OO gauge model of a standard British Rail coal hopper. The model is supplied in a pristine finish and carries Simpson livery. It has a minimum curve radius of 1 and the manufacturer part number is 4F‑034‑108. The model represents the era of the pre‑nationalisation “Big Four” railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.

The prototype hopper was based on a 1930s LNER design and was built of all‑steel construction. Over 23 000 of the full‑size wagons were manufactured between 01/01/1949 and 31/12/1958 and remained in service until the early 1980s, often being modified or rebuilt due to the heavy wear of coal traffic.

Key features of the model include profiled wheels, a load‑carrying body, highly detailed moulded panels and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings. The dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffer, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height.
