Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

MODEL
These models are modelled on the GWR and LMS ventilated vans; the LMS version had a steel corrugated end, whilst the GWR was traditionally planked.

Dapol Ventilated Van BR Grey 183319 is an OO gauge model measuring 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height. It is finished in pristine condition with an accurate British Railways grey livery, profiled wheels and a highly detailed body moulding. The van features NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings and a tension‑lock system, and it rides on a four‑wheel arrangement.

The model represents a British Railways early‑crest ventilated van built by LMS Wolverton between 1935 and 1945. Its manufacturer part number is 4F‑011‑025. The original vans were wooden‑bodied vehicles with ventilators, used by the pre‑nationalisation rail companies for rapid transport of perishable goods. BR later standardised a similar design, which remained in service until the 1960s before being superseded by larger, pallet‑access vans. Many examples survive in preservation.
