Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

Dapol Ventilated Van Twin Pack LMS 538827/864 Weathered is a model of a 4‑wheel LMS ventilated van in LMS grey livery with a weathered finish. It measures 82 mm long, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high and uses NEM / tension‑lock couplings. The kit carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑011‑101 and represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The original vans were built at LMS Wolverton between 1935 and 1945.

Ventilated vans were the principal means of transporting perishable goods quickly while keeping the cargo in good condition. All four pre‑nationalisation companies produced vans with a wooden body and ventilators that provided a constant flow of fresh air around the load.

These vans survived into the British Railways era until the 1960s, when longer, wider‑door vans for pallet access replaced them. Many examples from each company remain in preservation today.
