Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

Dapol has released a model of a ventilated van in LMS grey livery, representing a vehicle built by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at Wolverton between 1935 and 1945. The model is to OO gauge and features a 4-wheel design.

The ventilated van was a type of goods wagon used by the pre-nationalised railways to transport perishable goods, with all four major companies - LNER, LMS, GWR, and SR - having their own designs. The LMS version of this model features a steel corrugated end, while the GWR version would have had a traditionally planked end.

The Dapol model includes a number of features, such as profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, and highly detailed body moulding. The model also features NEM pockets with self-centring couplings.

The measurements of the model are as follows: length over buffer is 82mm, width is 33mm, and height is 48mm.
