Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

Dapol 21t Hopper NE 193275 is a weathered model of a British Rail standard coal hopper. It measures 82 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height, and carries the LNER grey livery. The minimum curve radius is listed as Radius 1 and the manufacturer's part number is 4F‑034‑113. The model represents the period of the Big Four railway companies – LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.

Following the nationalisation of the railways, British Rail inherited a large fleet of wagons and hoppers for coal transport. In the post‑war rebuild, demand for coal increased and BR introduced a standard coal hopper based on a 1930s LNER design, constructed entirely of steel. Over 23 000 of these hoppers were built between 1949 and 1958 and they remained in use until the early 1980s.

Because of the heavy wear and tear encountered in service, many of the original hoppers were modified or rebuilt during their working lives. The Dapol model reflects this history with a weathered finish, illustrating the typical appearance of a well‑used coal hopper from the era.
