Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL
These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

Dapol 21‑ton Hopper, Sykes livery, in OO gauge, presented in a weathered finish. The model measures 82 mm over the buffers, 33 mm wide and 40 mm high, and is designed for a minimum radius curve of 1. It carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑034‑014 and represents the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

Following nationalisation, British Rail inherited a large fleet of coal wagons. To meet post‑war demand for coal, BR introduced a standard hopper based on a 1930s LNER design. Over 23,000 of these all‑steel wagons were built between 1949 and 1958 and remained in use until the early 1980s, many being modified and rebuilt during their service life.

The model replicates the later modified welded 21 t hopper. It features profiled wheels, is supplied complete with a load, and has a highly detailed, finely moulded body. NEM pockets are fitted with self‑centring couplings.

Key specifications: gauge OO; finish weathered; livery Sykes; length 82 mm; width 33 mm; height 40 mm; minimum curve radius 1; period represented – The Big Four.
