Manufacturer description

The 24 ton steel ore hopper wagon was originally drawn up and produced by Charles Roberts of Wakefield in the early 1930s and very similar vehicles were also produced by other manufacturers from around this time. Originally, they were supplied to private owners, rather than the main railway companies, and their principle use was for the carriage of iron ore to the various steelworks.

In later years, although their main use was still for ore traffic, they were also used for a variety of other loads including coal for which they carried a reduced tonnage. They were finally decommissioned in the early 1980s with several surviving into preservation.

Dapol Millom Iron Works 24‑ton steel ore hopper wagon – weathered finish. The model is in a weathered livery representing Millom Iron Works, with a minimum radius curve of 1 and NEM coupling. It has a four‑wheel arrangement and is built to a scale of 4 mm to the foot.

The real wagon was designed and built by Charles Roberts of Wakefield in the early 1930s. It was originally supplied to private owners for the transport of iron ore to steelworks, and later also carried coal at a reduced tonnage. The wagons were withdrawn from service in the early 1980s, with several examples surviving in preservation.

The model copy is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, a precisely moulded body, and a superbly printed livery. NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings are included. Measurements are 82 mm in length over buffer, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height.

The kit represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and makes a suitable addition to any British railway modelling collection.
