About RailwayModels.uk

RailwayModels.uk is an independent website listing UK model railway exhibitions and events, model railway products, videos from the most popular model railway YouTube channels, and shops selling model railway products.

Originally launched in 2007, this is the third iteration of a website that I originally created primarily for my own use, but kept going because other people seem to find it useful, too!

Railway Models UK is part of the website portfolio of Good Stuff ltd, a professional web publishing and consultancy firm based in Worcestershire. But it's also the work of someone who genuinely understands and loves the world of railway modelling!

I've been a railway modeller, of varying levels of proficiency, since I was a teenager. But living adult life in various rented flats and shared houses put a bit of a halt to that. After moving into a house of my own, in Stoke-on-Trent in 2002, though, I came across a leaflet advertising the Stafford Model Railway Exhibition, and decided to go along to it - the first show I'd been to for over a decade. While there, I was inspired to buy a cheap loco, a controller and an oval of track, and took them home and set up my first layout since I was a teenager.

Since my day job is a web developer and IT professional, I thought it might be fun to set up a website on the subject. I initially considered running a forum, but then discovered RMweb and decided there was little point trying to recreate something that already existed. So I pivoted the site to a database of products, and added an event calendar. I also discovered the UK Model Shops website, which to some extent did already cover things that I'd decided to do (specifically, the events calendar), but that's very much oriented at the committed modelling enthusiast whereas this is aimed more at a more general audience - including those who don't know much about model railways but enjoy going along to shows and maybe running a train set at home.

The site has grown a lot since then, but the focus has always been on making the information understandable and readily accessible.
