Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL
These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

Dapol Simpson 21 Ton Hopper Wagon is a model kit representing a British Railways standard coal hopper. It is produced in OO gauge and carries a Simpson livery. The model is designed for a minimum radius curve of 1 chain (approximately 66 ft) and is supplied with the manufacturer part number 4F-034-017. It depicts rolling stock from the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The real wagon design was based on a 1930s LNER hopper and was built from all‑steel construction. Over 23,000 examples were manufactured by British Railways between 1949 and 1958, and they remained in operational service until the early 1980s. Many units were subsequently modified or rebuilt because of the heavy wear incurred in coal transport.

The Dapol model reflects the later welded version of the 21‑ton hopper. It features profiled wheels, a load shown on the body, finely moulded detailing, and NEM pockets equipped with self‑centering couplings.

Measurements of the finished model are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height.
