Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant - ow and circulation of fresh air around their cargo. Dapol have modelled the GWR and LMS ventilated vans, the LMS version had a steel corrugated end, whilst the GWR was traditionally planked. Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation. The Dapol models of the LMS and GWR ventilated van feature: • Highly detailed body moulding • Accurately applied livery • Profiled wheels • NEM pockets with self-centring couplings

Dapol Ventilated Van LMS Grey 117870 is a 00‑scale model representing a weathered LMS ventilated van. The finish is weathered and the livery is LMS grey. It features NEM / tension‑lock coupling, a four‑wheel arrangement and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑011‑034. The real vans were built by LMS Wolverton between 1935 and 1945 and the model depicts the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

Ventilated vans were used to transport perishable goods, relying on a wooden body with ventilators to provide a constant flow of fresh air. Each of the pre‑nationalisation companies had its own design; the LMS version had a steel corrugated end while the GWR version was traditionally planked. These vans remained in service after nationalisation until British Rail introduced standardised versions, which were superseded in the 1960s by longer vans with wider doors for pallet access. A number of original vans have survived in preservation.

The Dapol model includes highly detailed body moulding, accurately applied livery, profiled wheels and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings. It is suited to collectors and model railway enthusiasts seeking a historically accurate representation of a mid‑20th‑century LMS ventilated van.
