Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

MODEL
These models are modelled on the GWR and LMS ventilated vans; the LMS version had a steel corrugated end, whilst the GWR was traditionally planked.

Dapol Ventilated Van LMS Fruit Van 511254 Weathered is an OO gauge model of a London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) ventilated fruit van. The model is finished in a weathered LMS grey livery, measures 82 mm long, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high, and carries the running number 511254. It features NEM/Tension‑lock couplings and a four‑wheel arrangement. The original wagons were built at LMS Wolverton between 1935–1945 and the part number for this model is 4F‑011‑014. It represents the period of the Big Four railway companies before nationalisation.

Ventilated vans were used by all four pre‑nationalised railway companies to transport perishable goods, employing a wooden body with ventilators to maintain a constant flow of fresh air. These wagons remained in service after nationalisation until the 1960s, when longer vans with wider doorways for pallet access were introduced. Numerous examples have survived into preservation.

The Dapol model includes profiled wheels, accurately applied livery and highly detailed body moulding. The NEM pockets contain self‑centring couplings. Its dimensions are 82 mm over the buffer, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high.
