Manufacturer description

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently and yet maintaining their contents in peak condition. All four of the pre-nationalised rail companies had their own particular designs, but each shared the same basic principles of having a wooden body with ventilators, which allowed a constant flow of circulating fresh air around their cargo.

Ventilated vans from all four companies survived into nationalisation until BR eventually standardised its own version and these were in use until the 1960s at which time longer vans with wider door ways to allow pallet access were introduced. Many ventilated vans from all companies survive into preservation.

Dapol has released a weathered version of their OO gauge ventilated van in BR grey livery. This model features a 4-wheel design and a built-in NEM/Tension lock coupling. The vehicle's dimensions are 82mm in length, 33mm in width, and 48mm in height.

The ventilated van was a common sight on British railways, used for transporting perishable goods that required a constant flow of fresh air. Before nationalisation, each of the four major pre-nationalised rail companies had its own design, but they all shared the same basic principles. The BR standardised its own version in the post-war period, which was used until the 1960s.

The Dapol model is based on the LMS and GWR designs, with the LMS version featuring a steel corrugated end and the GWR featuring a traditionally planked end. The model boasts profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, and highly detailed body moulding. It also features NEM pockets with self-centring couplings. The model is a representation of the early crest period of British Railways.
