Manufacturer description

Ventilated Van BR Grey 183319 Weathered

Ventilated vans were the primary way of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently, yet maintaining goods in peak condition. All four pre-nationalised companies had their own design of ventilated van, but shared the same principals of design; a wooden body with ventilators allowing a constant flow and circulation of fresh air around the cargo. Dapol have modelled two varieties; the GWR type with its wooden planked ends and the LMS type with its steel corrugated end. Both these vans were in use right up to the 1960’s and several survive into preservation.

The Dapol Model of the ventilated van features:

Dapol Ventilated Van BR Grey 183319 is a OO gauge model in a weathered finish with BR grey livery. It is fitted with NEM/Tension‑lock couplings, a four‑wheel arrangement and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑011‑026. The model represents British Railways Early Crest and is built to the specifications of vans produced by LMS Wolverton between 1935 and 1945.

Ventilated vans were the principal means of transporting perishable goods quickly and efficiently before nationalisation, using a wooden body with ventilators to provide constant airflow. Each of the four pre‑nationalised companies had its own design; the LMS version featured a steel corrugated end, while the GWR version had wooden planked ends. These vans remained in service until the 1960s and several examples survive in preservation.

The Dapol model includes a finely moulded body, weathered finish, accurately applied livery and printed details, profiled wheels, NEM pockets and self‑centering couplings. It is intended for model railway enthusiasts seeking a historically accurate representation of an early British Railways ventilated van.
