Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL
These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

Dapol Simpson 21‑ton hopper wagon (weathered) is an OO‑scale model representing a standard British Railways coal hopper that was based on a 1930s LNER design. The model is finished in a weathered livery, carries the Simpson nameboard, and is supplied under Dapol part number 4F‑034‑018. It measures 82 mm long, 33 mm wide and 40 mm high, with a minimum curve radius of 1 inch (radius 1), and includes NEM pocket couplings with self‑centering couplers.

The prototype was introduced after nationalisation to meet the post‑World War II surge in coal demand. Over 23 000 were built between 01/01/1949 and 31/12/1958 and remained in use until the early 1980s, often being modified or rebuilt due to heavy wear.

Key features of the model include profiled wheels, a highly detailed and finely moulded steel body, and a load fitted in the hopper. It is suitable for layouts that depict the era of the Big Four railways (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
