Manufacturer description

The 24 ton steel ore hopper wagon was originally drawn up and produced by Charles Roberts of Wakefield in the early 1930s and very similar vehicles were also produced by other manufacturers from around this time. Originally, they were supplied to private owners, rather than the main railway companies, and their principle use was for the carriage of iron ore to the various steelworks.

In later years, although their main use was still for ore traffic, they were also used for a variety of other loads including coal for which they carried a reduced tonnage. They were finally decommissioned in the early 1980s with several surviving into preservation.

Dapol 24T Hopper, Richard Thomas livery, in a weathered finish. The OO gauge model replicates a 24‑ton steel ore hopper wagon, built by Charles Roberts between 1949 and 1950 (part number 4F‑033‑103). It is fitted with NEM couplings, a minimum curve radius of 1, and a four‑wheel arrangement.

The original wagons were designed in the early 1930s for private owners to transport iron ore to steelworks, later also carrying coal at reduced tonnage. They remained in service for ore traffic until the early 1980s, with several examples preserved.

The model features profiled wheels, highly detailed body moulding, a superbly printed Richard Thomas livery, and NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings. Measurements are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm wide and 40 mm high.
