Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)

Manufacturer description

On nationalisation, the newly formed BR inherited a vast collection of rolling stock including wagons and hoppers designed to carry coal. As the national rebuild gained full force after the devastation of World War II, the demand for coal soared and BR decided to produce a standard coal hopper to help improve efficiency.

The variant finally chosen was based on a 1930s LNER design and was of an all steel construction. Over 23,000 of these were built between 1949 and 1958 and continued in service until the early 1980s. Due to the heavy wear and tear these hoppers endured, many were modified and rebuilt.

MODEL

These model hopper wagons are typical of the later modified design of welded 21t hopper.

Dapol British Gas 21 ton hopper wagon, model number 147, is presented in a weathered finish. The model measures 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 40 mm in height, and is supplied in the British Gas livery. It is built to OO gauge and features NEM coupling pockets with self‑centring couplers.

The wagon reproduces the post‑nationalisation standard coal hopper introduced by British Railways after World War II. Based on a 1930s LNER design, the full‑size wagons were all‑steel, with over 23 000 constructed between 1949 and 1958 and remaining in service until the early 1980s. The model reflects the later modified welded design, incorporating profiled wheels, a load, and a finely moulded, highly detailed body.

Key specifications include a minimum curve radius of 1 and the manufacturer part number 4F‑034‑103. The period represented by the model is the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
