The O&K JHA hoppers were built by Orenstein & Koppel to coincide with the introduction of the Class 59’s in the UK for aggregate haulage by Foster Yeoman. They remain in service to date with Mendip Rail Ltd. A rake of these wagons consist of two outer wagons and a number of inner wagons.

The notable feature is that the two outer wagons have screw link couplings and buffers on the outer most edge of the train, whilst the connection between inner wagons is a buckeye style coupling allowing closer coupling and hence an overall reduction in length of the train which was considered an important design aim.

Dapol O & K JHA (middle hopper) OO model in Foster Yeoman livery, representing the initial privatisation era of British freight wagons.

The prototype wagons were built by Orenstein & Koppel between 1988 and 1989 for use with Foster Yeoman’s Class 59 locomotives hauling aggregate. They remain in service with Mendip Rail Ltd and are formed as a rake of two outer wagons and a number of inner wagons.

Key specifications of the real wagons include a minimum curve radius of 2 chains, power pickup from two of four axles, NEM/Buckeye couplings on the inner side and Buckeye with tension lock on the outer side, and a bogie wheel arrangement.

The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring a die‑cast chassis, profiled wheels and sprung buffers on the outermost wagons. Two versions are supplied: inner wagons without buffers and with Buckeye couplings, and outer wagons with a lamp, sprung buffers and a standard OO model coupling with an NEM pocket at one end. Both versions incorporate a close‑coupling mechanism suitable for a minimum radius of 438 mm. An accessory pack provides two types of inter‑connecting pipe – loose and flexible – and a working rear lamp on the outermost end, controllable via a 6‑pin DCC socket.

Measurements are 182 mm in length over buffer, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height.
