Manufacturer description

The O&K JHA hoppers were built by Orenstein & Koppel to coincide with the introduction of the Class 59’s in the UK for aggregate haulage by Foster Yeoman. They remain in service to date with Mendip Rail Ltd. A rake of these wagons consist of two outer wagons and a number of inner wagons.

The notable feature is that the two outer wagons have screw link couplings and buffers on the outer most edge of the train, whilst the connection between inner wagons is a buckeye style coupling allowing closer coupling and hence an overall reduction in length of the train which was considered an important design aim.

The Dapol O & K JHA (end hopper) Foster Yeoman 19302 Early model is a highly detailed representation of the real-life Orenstein & Koppel JHA hoppers built for Foster Yeoman in the late 1980s. These wagons were designed to work in conjunction with the Class 59 locomotives, and have remained in service with Mendip Rail Ltd to the present day.

The model features a diecast chassis, profiled wheels, and sprung buffers on the outermost wagons, while the inner wagons have buckeye couplings. The set includes both inner and outer wagons, with the outer wagons featuring a lamp and standard OO model coupling with a NEM pocket. The close coupling mechanism allows for smooth operation on curves as tight as 438mm radius.

The model is designed from works drawings and features a high level of detail, including separately added details. The accessory pack includes two versions of interconnecting pipes, one loose and unconnected, and one flexible to connect between adjacent wagons. The working rear lamp on the outermost end of the train is controlled by a 6-pin DCC socket.

The measurements of the model are as follows: length over buffer 182mm, width 33mm, and height 48mm. The model is suitable for use on OO gauge layouts and is DCC ready, with a 6-pin socket for control of the lamp.
