The O&K JHA hoppers were built by Orenstein & Koppel to coincide with the introduction of the Class 59’s in the UK for aggregate haulage by Foster Yeoman. They remain in service to date with Mendip Rail Ltd. A rake of these wagons consist of two outer wagons and a number of inner wagons.

The notable feature is that the two outer wagons have screw link couplings and buffers on the outer most edge of the train, whilst the connection between inner wagons is a buckeye style coupling allowing closer coupling and hence an overall reduction in length of the train which was considered an important design aim.

The Dapol O & K JHA middle‑hopper model is a highly detailed 0 gauge replica of the Orenstein & Koppel (O & K) JHA wagons that were built for Foster Yeoman between 1988 and 1989. The original wagons were introduced alongside the Class 59 locomotives for aggregate haulage and continue in service with Mendip Rail Ltd. The model represents the period of initial privatisation.

The model reflects the distinct design of the real wagons: outer wagons are fitted with screw‑link couplings, buffers and a rear lamp, while inner wagons have buckeye couplings and no buffers. Both types feature a close‑coupling mechanism that operates on a minimum curve radius of 438 mm (approximately 2 ft). The hoppers are supplied with an accessory pack containing two versions of inter‑connecting pipes, one loose and one flexible for linking adjacent wagons.

Construction details include a die‑cast chassis, profiled wheels, sprung buffers on the outermost wagons, a working rear lamp controlled via a 6‑pin DCC socket, and numerous separately added details modelled from works drawings. The model is available with a manufacturer part number of 4F‑050‑104.

Overall dimensions are 182 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height. The model is designed for use on OO gauge track and is suitable for collectors and railway modellers seeking an accurate representation of the O & K JHA hopper.
