Prototype Era
Era 9 (1995 to 2004) Initial Privatisation
The O&K JHA hoppers were built by Orenstein & Koppel to coincide with the introduction of the Class 59’s in the UK for aggregate haulage by Foster Yeoman. They remain in service to date with Mendip Rail Ltd. A rake of these wagons consist of two outer wagons and a number of inner wagons.
The notable feature is that the two outer wagons have screw link couplings and buffers on the outer most edge of the train, whilst the connection between inner wagons is a buckeye style coupling allowing closer coupling and hence an overall reduction in length of the train which was considered an important design aim.
MODEL
These model O&K JHA Hoppers are highly detailed and will be a great addition to your rolling stock.

Dapol OO scale model of the Orenstein & Koppel (O&K) JHA end hopper, supplied in Foster Yeoman livery. The model replicates the freight wagon built by O&K between 1988 and 1989 for the initial privatisation era, with part number 4F‑050‑003. It is DCC ready, featuring a 6‑pin socket, and can draw power from two of its four axles. The wheel arrangement uses bogies and the minimum curve radius is 2 ft (438 mm). Couplings are NEM/Buckeye (inner) and Buckeye with tension lock (outer).
The original wagons were introduced to haul Class 59 locomotives for aggregate traffic on the Mendip Rail network and remain in service with Mendip Rail Ltd. A typical rake comprises two outer wagons equipped with screw‑link couplings, buffers and a rear lamp, together with a number of inner wagons that use buckeye couplings and lack buffers.
The model includes a die‑cast chassis, profiled wheels and sprung buffers on the outermost wagons. Both inner and outer versions are provided: the inner wagons have buckeye couplings only, while the outer wagons have a lamp, sprung buffers and a standard OO model coupling with an NEM pocket at one end, the opposite end being fitted with buckeye couplings. An accessory pack supplies two types of inter‑wagon pipe – a loose version and a flexible connector – and the rear lamp on the outermost wagon flashes under DC or DCC power.
Overall dimensions are 182 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height. The model is produced from works drawings and finished with a high level of detail, including numerous separately added components.
