9681. British Railways Black Livery, Late Crest
9681 was one of the last pannier tanks to be built. Emerging from Swindon Works in 1949 under the ownership of British Railways it was part of the penultimate lot of 10 locomotives. Initially allocated to Tondu in South Wales, it spent periods at Oswestry and Hereford before being withdrawn from Cardiff East Dock after a 16 year working life. Luckily it was bought by scrap merchant Dai Woodham and spent a number of years languishing before being moved to the Dean Forest Railway and returned to steam in 1984
Features: Top feed boiler, 8750 style cab, Bunker steps fitted, Injector overflow routed outside running plate
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Accurascale has released a new model of the 8750 Class Pannier Tank locomotive in BR black livery with a late crest. This model is available with DCC sound and features a highly detailed 0-6-0PT 00 gauge design on 16.5mm track.
The model has a minimum radius of 438mm and is built to 1:76.2 scale. It has RP25-110 profile 00 gauge wheels and a coreless motor with a flywheel for maximum performance and slow speed running. The chassis is made of die-cast metal and has pickups on all wheels. The model is DCC ready or can be fitted with an ESU LokSound V5 sound system.
The model has a number of detailed features, including a fully detailed cab interior, etched metal and plastic detail parts, and scale width wire handrails and sand pipes. The braking system is fully functional, with brake rigging, brake blocks, and screw/3 link couplings. The model also has a sliding roof ventilator and magnetically removable smoke box door.
The 8750 Class Pannier Tank was a class of 0-6-0 locomotives built by various manufacturers between 1929 and 1950. They were designed to be a standard, lightweight, and powerful locomotive that could be used on a variety of tasks, including shunting, freight, and passenger services. The class was built in several batches, with the first 100 locomotives being built by the North British Locomotive Company and the Great Western Railway's own workshops at Swindon.
The class was later modified with a larger and more comfortable cab, becoming the 9700 class, and a further 500 locomotives were built to this design. The 8750 class was used extensively throughout the Great Western Railway and later British Railways' western region, and many were preserved after withdrawal.
Today, 16 locomotives from the 5700 and 8750 classes remain in existence, with four of these having been re-certified for mainline use and appearing on excursion trains.
