Accurascale has released a new 00 gauge model of the GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank locomotive, Class 67xx, in Great Western Railway green livery. The model is based on the 57xx/67xx/8750 class, a standard locomotive design that was introduced in the early 20th century.
The 57xx class was designed by Charles B Collett at the Great Western Railway's design office, with the first 100 locomotives being built in 1929. The class was later extended to over 800 locomotives, with various contractors including North British Locomotive Company, Bagnall, Beyer-Peacock, Kerr-Stuart, Armstrong Whitworth, and Yorkshire Engine Co. contributing to the production.
The Pannier Tank locomotives were designed to be a standard, go-anywhere locomotive that was easy to maintain and handle, with a Belpaire boiler, inside cylinders driven by Stephenson's valve gear, enclosed cab, and pannier tanks. They were used for a variety of tasks, including shunting, short trip freight work, and branch line passenger services.
The model is highly detailed, with a die-cast metal chassis, pickups to all wheels, and a coreless motor with flywheel geared for maximum performance and slow speed running. It is also DCC ready or can be fitted with an ESU LokSound V5 sound system. The model features a range of detailed parts, including grab handles, steps, buffer pipework, lamp irons, and a sliding roof ventilator.
The Pannier Tanks were a staple of the Great Western Railway and later British Railways, with over 800 locomotives built between 1929 and 1950. They were known for their reliability and versatility, and many were preserved after withdrawal from service. Today, 16 locomotives from the class remain, with some having been re-certified for mainline use and used on excursion trains.
