The Accurascale 5700 Class 57xx Pannier Tank model is a highly detailed 00 gauge locomotive, representing the Great Western Railway's standard pannier tank locomotive. Built from 1929 to 1950, the 5700 class was designed to be a lightweight yet powerful locomotive, easy to maintain and handle, with a Belpaire boiler, inside cylinders driven by Stephenson's valve gear, enclosed cab, and pannier tanks.
The model features a die-cast metal chassis and pickups to all wheels, a coreless motor with flywheel for maximum performance and slow speed running, and Next18 DCC readiness or ESU LokSound V5 sound. It also includes etched metal and plastic detail parts, including grab handles, steps, buffer pipework, and lamp irons. The locomotive's cab interior is fully detailed, with twin LED pulsing/steady firebox glow, and the model features scale width wire handrails and sand pipes.
The 5700 class was built by various contractors, including North British, Bagnall, Beyer-Peacock, Kerr-Stuart, Armstrong Whitworth, and Yorkshire Engine Co., with a total of 300 locomotives produced. The class was used extensively on the Great Western Railway and later British Railways western region network, with many being employed on a variety of tasks, including local pick-up freight trains, shunting yards, branch line passenger services, and ECS and pilot duties.
The first withdrawals began in 1956, and by 1966 the class was removed from squadron service. However, some locomotives were preserved and continued to be used in industrial and London Transport service until the 1970s. Today, 16 pannier tanks remain in preservation, with four of these having been re-certified for mainline use and seen on excursion trains running at speeds of up to 45mph.
