Rapido SER/SECR 5‑plank 10‑ton open wagon – SR Pre‑’36 Brown No 12784 is a 1:76 (OO gauge) model replicating a South Eastern Railway (SER) and later South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) freight wagon. The manufacturer part number is 824019 and the model represents the pre‑grouping period, i.e. before the 1923 railway grouping.
The prototype wagons were built between 1897 and 1901 to address a rapid rise in freight traffic. About 1 250 open wagons were constructed, split between two closely related diagrams: 1340 (5‑plank open goods) and 1341 (5‑plank open coal). Builders included Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co, Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and the railway’s own Ashford Works, with subcontracting making exact production numbers uncertain.
Both diagrams measured 15 ft 5 in in length with a 9 ft 4 in wheelbase. The principal visual difference is the end shape: diagram 1340 features rounded ends, while diagram 1341 has low‑D‑shaped ends fitted with a Williams pattern sheet rail. Many square‑ended examples were later converted in 1912 by removing the rounded ends.
The wagons entered Southern Railway stock after the 1923 grouping and were progressively withdrawn, the last of the D1340 series being taken out of service in 1942 and the final D1341 in 1948. Running numbers are not recorded, as the wagons were likely in departmental use at the time of withdrawal.
The model includes split‑spoke wheels with metal bearings, NEM coupler pockets, high‑detail treatment above and below the floor line, and an accurately applied brown pre‑1936 livery. It is intended for use on British OO‑scale layouts.
