Manufacturer part number: 824013. The model represents a pre‑grouping South Eastern Railway (SER) and later South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) wagon, corresponding to diagrams SR D1340 and D1341.

The original wagons were constructed between 1897 and 1901 by Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co, Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and the railway’s own Ashford Works. About 1 250 open wagons were built, split almost evenly between the 5‑plank open goods type (diagram 1340) and the 5‑plank open coal type (diagram 1341). The bodies were 15 ft 5 in long with a 9 ft 4 in wheelbase. Diagram 1341 wagons had low‑D‑shaped ends and a Williams pattern sheet rail, whereas diagram 1340 wagons featured round ends. Many units were later converted to square ends in 1912.

The wagons entered SECR service after the 1899 amalgamation of the SER and the London, Chatham and Dover Railway. They continued in use after the 1923 grouping when the Southern Railway inherited the majority of the fleet. The last D1340 was withdrawn in 1942 and the final D1341 in 1948.
