SER/SECR 5‑Plank 10‑ton open wagon – SER Red No 8639 is a 1:76 (OO gauge) model of a late‑19th‑century British freight wagon. The model is supplied by Rapido, carries the manufacturer part number 824003 and represents the pre‑grouping period.

The original wagons were built between 1897 and 1901 to meet the increased freight traffic on the South Eastern Railway (SER) and, after 1899, on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR). About 1 250 open wagons were produced, split between diagram 1340 (5‑plank open goods) and diagram 1341 (5‑plank open coal). They were 15 ft 5 in long with a 9 ft 4 in wheelbase; the coal version had low‑D‑shaped ends and Williams pattern sheet rail, while the goods version had rounded ends.

Construction was carried out by Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co, Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and the railway’s own Ashford works, with some subcontracting that makes exact builder numbers uncertain. The wagons featured split‑spoke wheels with metal bearings, NEM coupler pockets and a high‑quality livery application.

The Southern Railway inherited most of the fleet after the 1923 grouping. The last diagram 1340 wagon was withdrawn in 1942 and the final diagram 1341 in 1948, after which they were taken into departmental stock and their running numbers were lost. The Rapido model reproduces these details with a split‑spoke wheel set, high level of detail above and below the floor line and accurate SECR red livery.
