SER/SECR 5‑Plank 10 ton open wagon – model number 824011.
The wagon represents the pre‑grouping era of the South Eastern Railway (SER) and its successor, the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR).

In the final decade of the 19th century freight traffic on the SER increased sharply, prompting the railway to order around 2 000 wagons from external builders and its own Ashford Works. About 1 250 of these were the 5‑plank open wagons, split between diagram 1340 (open goods) and diagram 1341 (open coal). Construction took place between 1897 and 1901 by Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co, Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and the railway’s Ashford Works, with some subcontracting that obscures exact production numbers.

Both diagrams measured 15 ft 5 in in length with a 9 ft 4 in wheelbase. The principal visual difference is that the diagram 1341 versions have low‑D‑shaped ends fitted with a Williams‑pattern sheet rail, whereas diagram 1340 versions have rounded ends. Many wagons were later converted to square ends in 1912, and a number may have been built with square ends originally.

The model is supplied in SECR Maunsell dark grey (no 7964) at 1:76 scale (OO gauge). It features split‑spoke wheels on metal bearings, high‑detail treatment above and below the floor line, a high‑quality livery finish, and NEM coupler pockets. The original wagons remained in service after the 1923 grouping, with the last diagram 1340 withdrawn on 20/04/1942 and the final diagram 1341 on 15/08/1948, by which time they were likely in departmental stock.
