SER/SECR 5‑Plank 10‑ton open wagon – SER Red No. 7930

The wagon is identified by manufacturer part number 824001 and represents the pre‑grouping period of British railway history. It is a 1:76 scale (OO gauge) model of the South Eastern Railway (later South Eastern and Chatham Railway) open wagon, built to the SR diagrams D1340 (round‑ended goods) and D1341 (low‑D‑ended coal).

The original wagons were constructed between 1897 and 1901 by Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co, Birmingham Railway Carriage and Wagon Co, Oldbury Railway Carriage and Wagon Co and the railway’s own Ashford works. A total of around 1 250 were produced, split almost evenly between the two diagrams. Both types measured 15 ft 5 in in overall length with a 9 ft 4 in wheelbase. The D1340 version had round ends, while the D1341 version featured low‑D ends and Williams Pattern sheet rail. Many units were later converted to square ends in 1912.

Key features of the model include split‑spoke wheels with metal bearings, NEM coupler pockets, detailed representation above and below the floor line, high‑quality livery application and a painted SER red livery as per the original. The model is supplied in 1:76 scale suitable for OO gauge layouts.

In service the wagons were used for both goods and coal traffic. The Southern Railway inherited most of the fleet after the 1923 grouping; the last D1340 was withdrawn in 1942 and the final D1341 in 1948. Running numbers for the individual wagons are not recorded, as many had entered departmental stock by the time of withdrawal.
