Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol shall be manufacturing these models from the early 1930's when cab side shutters were added.

FEATURES

MODEL
The locomotive has a diecast chassis with a five pole motor driving the rear wheel. To add compensation the centre driving wheels are sprung, the front pony truck is also sprung and operates on a cam so the model will negotiate R2 curves with ease.

Dapol Large Prairie 2‑6‑2 Tank Locomotive #4134 is an OO‑scale model of the Great Western Railway 5101 class, also known as the Large Prairie. The locomotive is finished in lined green with the early lion and wheel crest and carries the running number 4134. It represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and the era 1923‑1947.

The model is built to a pristine standard with a die‑cast chassis, a five‑pole motor driving the rear wheel and sprung centre driving wheels plus a sprung front pony truck. Electrical pick‑up is provided on all driving and tender wheels. The locomotive measures 164 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 48 mm in height and can negotiate a minimum curve radius of 438 mm (2nd radius). It is DCC‑ready, fitted with a slide‑in NEXT‑18 decoder board that requires no soldering, and includes a speaker connection. An optional sound kit is available.

Historical details: the real 5101 class was built between 1929 and 1949, with 140 units produced. The final twenty locomotives, constructed from 1946 to 1949, were delivered without the Great Western livery. The last eleven members of the 6100 batch were withdrawn in December 1965 (11/12/1965). Dapol’s model incorporates features such as a tall safety‑valve cover, bunker‑lamp brackets, and period‑appropriate smoke‑box fittings.
