Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5101 Lined BR Green Late Crest Steam Locomotive – DCC fitted.
The model is fitted with DCC, finishes in British Railways green with a late crest, and rides on a minimum radius curve of 438 mm (R2, 17.2 in). Power is collected from all wheels and the locomotive uses NEM/tension‑lock couplings. It represents a 2‑6‑2T wheel arrangement and carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑041‑015D.

The locomotive is modelled after the GWR Swindon Works locomotives built between 1929 and 1949 and depicts the British Railways late‑crest period. The original class was an updated version of the 3100 series, built from 1929‑1939 and later from 1946‑1949, with the final twenty units lacking Great Western livery. The last eleven locomotives of the 6100 batch were withdrawn in December 1965.

Technical features include a five‑pole skew‑wound motor, a toolless DCC and speaker PCB that slides out through the smokebox door, compensated chassis with all‑wheel drive, and realistic fire‑box glow synchronised with sound. The model has sprung buffers, die‑cast and profiled wheels with steel tyres, finely engineered motion, and prototypical connecting rods. A pull‑out PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket allows easy DCC conversion; sound‑fitted versions will incorporate Dapol’s recorded sounds and RealDrive functionality.

Optional detail parts are supplied separately and cover variants such as two safety‑valve‑cover styles, bunker‑lamp bracket shields, multiple smoke‑box lamp brackets, period‑appropriate number plates, top feed pipes, hand rails, lifting rings, water‑filler covers, cab side shutters, three cab profiles, and both curved and straight drop‑front running plates.
