Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5132 is a 2‑6‑2T GWR green steam locomotive model fitted with DCC sound. It represents a GWR large prairie from the period of the Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑041‑011S.

The prototype 5101 class was an evolution of the 3100 series, built between 1929 and 1939, with the later 6100 series added up to 1949. They were designed for London suburban work and featured higher boiler pressure. The final twenty locomotives omitted Great Western livery, and the last eleven members of the 6100 batch were withdrawn in December 1965.

Dapol has introduced extra tooling to model all known variants, using original GA drawings for accuracy. Optional detail sets allow the addition of different safety‑valve covers, bunker‑lamp brackets, smoke‑box lamp brackets (including British Rail period), smoke‑box number plates, top‑feed pipes, hand rails, lifting rings, water‑filler covers, cab side shutters, three cab profiles, curved or straight drop‑front running plates and appropriate motion brackets.

Technical features include a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth haulage, a toolless DCC and speaker PCB that can be installed by removing the smokebox door, a compensated chassis with all‑wheel drive and pick‑up, a front pony truck that permits full‑relief cylinder moulding while handling R2 (438 mm / 17.2 in) minimum radius curves, realistic fire‑box glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, die‑cast profiled wheels with steel tyres, finely engineered motion and prototypical connecting rods, and a pull‑out PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket for DCC conversion. Sound‑fitted versions incorporate Dapol‑recorded audio and RealDrive functionality for an immersive driving experience.
