Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 3146 is a 2‑6‑2T model of a Great Western Railway green locomotive, fitted with DCC. It represents the GWR 5101 and 6100 series built at Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949 and depicts the era of the Big Four railway companies.

The model operates on all wheels, with a minimum curve of radius 2 (R2, 438 mm / 17.2 in). It uses NEM/tension‑lock couplings, die‑cast and profiled wheels with steel tyres, a compensated chassis for reliable pickup, and a specially designed front pony truck that permits full‑relief cylinder moulding while navigating tight curves.

Historically the 5101 class were updated versions of the 3100 class, constructed from 1929 to 1939, with the later 6100 batch built from 1946 to 1949. The final eleven locomotives of the 6100 batch were withdrawn during December 1965. Dapol has added extra tooling to model each variant, and a range of optional details such as two styles of safety‑valve cover, various lamp brackets, period number plates, separate top‑feed pipes, lifting rings, water‑filler covers, cab side shutters, three cab profiles, and different front running plates.

Technical features include an ultra‑powerful 5‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth haulage, a toolless DCC and speaker installation PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket, realistic firebox glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, all‑wheel drive and finely engineered motion with prototypical connecting rods. Sound‑fitted versions will incorporate Dapol’s recorded audio and RealDrive functionality for an immersive driving experience.
