Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 8100 BR Green Late‑Crest Steam Locomotive – DCC Sound is a 2‑6‑2T model representing a British Railways late‑crest locomotive built at GWR Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949. The model is supplied in BR green with the late‑crest badge and carries the manufacturer part number 4S‑041‑014S. It is fitted with DCC sound and an ultra‑powerful 5‑pole skew‑wound motor, and all driving wheels are powered for reliable pickup on curves down to a minimum radius of 2 (R2, 438 mm / 17.2 in).

The locomotive incorporates Dapol’s toolless DCC and speaker installation PCB: the smokebox door is removed, the PCB is pulled out, speakers and decoder are clicked into place and the unit is slid back without tools or solder. The chassis is compensated, the front pony truck is designed to allow full‑relief cylinder moulding, and the model features sprung buffers, die‑cast and profiled wheels with steel tyres, and finely engineered motion with prototypical connecting rods.

Optional detailing is offered to represent the locomotive at various stages of its life, including two styles of safety‑valve cover, bunker‑lamp bracket shield, smoke‑box mounted lamp brackets, period‑specific smoke‑box number plates, separate top‑feed pipes and handrails, lifting rings, flip‑top water‑filler covers, cab side shutters (with or without), three cab profiles, straight or curved drop‑front running plates and appropriate motion brackets.

The final batch of the original 6100 series was withdrawn on 11 December 1965. Dapol has added extra tooling to model all variants of the large prairie class, using many original GWR drawings to ensure accuracy. Sound‑fitted versions include recorded locomotive noises and a RealDrive feature that allows the operator to control the train in a more immersive manner.
