Manufacturer description

Different model shown, pictures will be updated upon release.

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5134 GWR Green Shirt Button Steam Locomotive – DCC Sound is a ready‑to‑run model of a Great Western Railway 2‑6‑2T “large prairie” locomotive. It is presented in GWR green livery and carries the DCC Sound status. The model represents the 5101 class built at Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949 and is intended to portray the Big Four railway era.

The prototype locomotives were constructed from 1929 to 1939 as an updated version of the earlier 3100 class, with the final units produced from 1946 to 1949. The last eleven members of the 6100 batch were withdrawn in December 1965. Dapol has used original GWR drawings to produce an accurate representation, and a range of optional detail parts is available to reflect the various configurations the locomotives had during their service life.

Key technical features include a five‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth, high‑torque haulage and a compensated chassis that picks up power through all driving wheels. The DCC and speaker installation uses a toolless PCB that can be pulled out, the decoder socket fitted, and the board slid back in without soldering. Additional realism is provided by a realistic firebox glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, die‑cast and profiled wheels with steel tyres, and finely engineered motion with prototypical connecting rods. All‑wheel drive and a front pony truck allow the model to negotiate a minimum radius of 2 (R2, 438 mm/17.2 in) curves.

Optional separately fitted details include two styles of safety‑valve cover, various lamp brackets, a smoke‑box number plate for the British Rail period, top‑feed pipes, hand rails, lifting rings, screw‑down water filler covers, cab side shutters (or without), three cab profiles, curved or straight drop‑front running plates and appropriate motion brackets. Versions with DCC sound incorporate Dapol’s recorded sound set and features such as RealDrive for an immersive driving experience.
