Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5134 is a 2‑6‑2T button‑shunted steam locomotive model presented in Great Western Railway green livery and fitted with DCC. It represents a member of the 5101 class of large‑prairie locomotives, an updated version of the 3100 class built between 1929 and 1949 at GWR Swindon Works.

The model covers the period of the British “Big Four” (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The prototype locomotives were designed for London suburban services, with the later 6100 batch built after World War II; the final eleven were withdrawn on 11/12/1965. Dapol’s tooling now allows all variants of the class to be modelled.

Technical specifications include a minimum radius of 2 (R2 – 438 mm / 17.2 in), power pick‑up from all driving wheels, NEM/tension‑lock couplings and a die‑cast chassis with steel‑tyred wheels. The wheel arrangement is 2‑6‑2T and the manufacturer part number is 4S‑041‑010D.

The locomotive is driven by a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor and incorporates a toolless DCC and speaker PCB that can be installed by removing the smokebox door. Features include a compensated chassis, front pony‑truck allowing full‑relief cylinder moulding, realistic fire‑box glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, all‑wheel drive, finely engineered motion, prototypical connecting rods and a pull‑out PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket for easy conversion. Sound‑fitted versions are available with Dapol’s own recorded sounds and a RealDrive function for immersive operation.

A range of optional detail parts can be added to portray the locomotive at different stages of its life, such as two styles of safety‑valve cover, various lamp brackets, a BR‑period smokebox number plate, separate top‑feed pipes, hand rails, lifting rings, screw‑down water‑filler covers, cab‑side shutters, three cab profiles, curved or straight drop‑front running plates and an appropriate motion bracket.
