Locomotive background Information

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

General Specification

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models. To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol’s expertise in tool planning and design has allowed for other desirable Prairie variations to modelled at later dates such as the 3100, later 5100 and the 8100 prairies to be produced

Dapol's OO gauge Large Prairie 5101 Locomotive in BR Green Late Crest Livery

This OO gauge model is a representation of a 5101 class large prairie locomotive in BR green with late crest livery. The model features a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement and is powered by an ultra-powerful 5 pole skew wound motor. The locomotive has a minimum radius curve of 438mm and is designed to operate on R2 curves.

The model is available with a DCC status of 18, allowing for smooth and controllable running. The coupling is a NEM/Tension lock type, and the locomotive is designed for all-wheel power pickup. The model features a diecast and profiled wheels and steel tyres, as well as finely engineered motion and prototypical connecting rods.

The model is built to a high level of accuracy, with many original GA drawings used in its development. The locomotive is available with a range of separately added details, including two different styles of safety valve cover, bunker lamp bracket shield, and smoke box number plate for BR period.

Technical specifications include a compensated chassis for reliable running and pick up through all driving wheels, and a cleverly designed front pony truck that allows the locomotive to navigate tight curves. The model also features realistic fire box glow, sprung buffers, and all-wheel drive.

Sound versions of the model are available, which incorporate Dapol's own recorded sounds and features such as RealDrive, allowing the driver to experience a more immersive experience. The model is built to represent the 5101 class of locomotives, which were built between 1929 and 1949, and feature a higher boiler pressure than the earlier 3100 class. The last twenty locomotives were built without Great Western livery, and the last eleven were withdrawn in December 1965.
