Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5144 is a 2‑6‑2T model of a Great Western Railway green locomotive, supplied with DCC sound. The model incorporates a five‑pole skew‑wound motor, a toolless DCC and speaker installation PCB, and all‑wheel drive, with a chassis designed to pick up power through all driving wheels. It also features realistic firebox glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, die‑cast and profiled wheels with steel tyres, and detailed motion including prototypical connecting rods.

The locomotive represents the 5101 class, a series built at GWR Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949 for London suburban services. The final batch, produced from 1946 to 1949, includes variants that did not receive the Great Western livery. Dapol has added extra tooling to model all variants, offering optional details such as two styles of safety‑valve cover, bunker lamp bracket shield, smoke‑box mounted lamp brackets, period‑appropriate number plates, top‑feed pipes, lifting rings, water‑filler covers, cab side shutters, three cab profiles, and curved or straight drop‑front running plates.

Technical specifications include a compensated chassis for reliable running, a cleverly designed front pony truck that allows full‑relief cylinder moulding while navigating a minimum radius of R2 (438 mm / 17.2 in), and a pull‑out PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket for easy DCC conversion. Sound‑fitted versions use Dapol’s own recorded sounds and may incorporate RealDrive, allowing the driver to control the locomotive for a more immersive experience.

The model is suitable for use on layouts requiring a minimum curve radius of R2, with power pickup on all wheels and a NEM/tension‑lock coupling. It is supplied under manufacturer part number 4S‑041‑012S and is intended to depict the early British Railways crest period.
