Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 5132 is a GWR green 2‑6‑2T steam locomotive model fitted with DCC. It has a minimum radius of 2 (R2, 438 mm/17.2 in) and power is picked up from all driving wheels. The coupling uses NEM with a tension lock, and the model represents the Big Four era (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). The parts number is 4S‑041‑011D.

The prototype 5101 class were large prairie locomotives built at GWR Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949, the early batches (1929‑1939) being the 6100 series with higher boiler pressure for London suburban services. The final twenty locomotives, constructed from 1946 to 1949, did not receive the GWR livery. The last eleven of the 6100 batch were withdrawn in December 1965. Dapol’s tooling allows modelling of all variants, with optional details such as two safety‑valve‑cover styles, bunker‑lamp brackets, smoke‑box lamp brackets for the British Rail period, smoke‑box number plates, top‑feed pipes, handrails, lifting rings, screw‑down water‑filler covers, cab side shutters (with three cab profiles), straight or curved drop‑front running plates and appropriate motion brackets.

Technical features include a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor delivering powerful, smooth haulage and controllable running. Dapol’s toolless DCC and speaker PCB can be installed by removing the smokebox door and clicking the decoder and speakers into place. The compensated chassis provides reliable pickup through all wheels, and the front pony‑truck is designed to allow full‑relief cylinder moulding while negotiating tight curves. The model offers realistic fire‑box glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, all‑wheel drive, die‑cast profiled wheels with steel tyres, finely engineered motion and prototypical connecting rods, and a pull‑out PCB with a NEXT‑18 decoder socket for easy conversion. Sound‑fitted versions are available with Dapol’s recorded sounds and RealDrive functionality for an immersive driving experience.
