Locomotive background Information

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

General Specification

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models. To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol’s expertise in tool planning and design has allowed for other desirable Prairie variations to modelled at later dates such as the 3100, later 5100 and the 8100 prairies to be produced

The Dapol Large Prairie 8100 BR Green Late Crest Steam Locomotive is a model of one of the 5101 class of large prairie locomotives. These locomotives were built by the Great Western Railway's Swindon Works between 1929 and 1949, with the last twenty not receiving the Great Western livery. The model represents the locomotives as they appeared in British Railways Late Crest livery.

The model features a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement and a minimum radius curve of 438mm, allowing for ease of navigation on tighter curves. The locomotive is fitted with all-wheel drive and features a compensated chassis for reliable running and pick-up through all driving wheels.

The model includes a range of separately added details, including two different styles of safety valve cover, bunker lamp bracket shield, and smoke box number plate. Other features include separately fitted top feed pipes and hand rails, lifting rings, and screw down and flip top water filler covers. The model also includes three cab profiles and a curved and straight drop front running plate.

The Dapol Large Prairie 8100 is powered by an ultra-powerful and smooth 5-pole skew wound motor, providing great haulage and super controllable running. The model features Dapol's innovative toolless DCC & Speaker installation PCB, allowing for easy DCC conversion. The locomotive also includes a pull-out PCB with NEXT-18 decoder socket and a range of sound features, including RealDrive, which allows for a more immersive experience.

The model is available in OO gauge and is designed to represent the locomotives during the period of British Railways Late Crest. The model will be available in DCC Ready and sound fitted versions.
