Manufacturer description

The 5101 class of large prairie locomotives were updated versions of the 3100 class and built between 1929 and 1939 which included the 6100 series, with a higher boiler pressure and designed for London suburban services. The final locomotives were built between 1946 and 1949 with the last twenty not receiving Great Western livery.

During December 1965 the last eleven locomotives were withdrawn all being from the 6100 batch. Dapol has now added extra tooling to allow us to model all variants of these locomotives.

Many original GA drawings were used in the development of these accurate and authentic models.

To portray these locomotives over their lifetime the following details will be available where they are applicable through the addition of many separately added details

Dapol Large Prairie 3131 is a 2‑6‑2T Great Western Railway steam locomotive model finished in GWR green and fitted with Digital Command Control (DCC). The model is built to the specifications of the 5101 class, an updated version of the 3100 class introduced between 1929 and 1939, with the final batch produced from 1946 to 1949.

The locomotive is represented in the period of the British “Big Four” railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). It features all‑wheel power pickup, a minimum curve radius of 2 R (438 mm / 17.2 in), NEM/tension‑lock couplings and die‑cast, profiled wheels with steel tyres. The chassis is compensated for reliable running, and the front pony truck allows full‑relief cylinder moulding while negotiating tight curves.

Dapol’s DCC system uses a five‑pole skew‑wound motor for smooth haulage and a toolless PCB that can be installed by removing the smokebox door – no soldering or tools are required. The model includes realistic fire‑box glow synchronised with sound, sprung buffers, an all‑wheel drive, and finely engineered motion with prototypical connecting rods. Versions with the NEXT‑18 decoder and recorded sound can be fitted, offering features such as RealDrive for an immersive driving experience.

Optional detail parts are available to depict the locomotive’s evolution, including two safety‑valve‑cover styles, various lamp brackets, a BR‑period smoke‑box number plate, top‑feed pipes, hand rails, lifting rings, water‑filler covers, cab side shutters, three cab profiles, and both curved and straight front running plates.
