Manufacturer description

66017 arrived in the UK aboard the ‘M.V. Fairmast’ and was unloaded at Newport Docks on 31 October 1998, wearing the maroon and gold house colours of operator EWS. Built without buckeye coupling and mirrors, it gained the former in 2002 and the latter in 2005. Otherwise an anonymous Class 66 in the fleet, it does have the standout feature of being one of the three tripcock-fitted Class 66s available for use over the Metropolitan line. Still in the fleet of DB Cargo, it now proudly wears the iconic red of the current freight operator.

Accurascale Class 66 EWS No.66017 Diesel Locomotive – DCC Sound is a model of a British freight locomotive in the EWS livery, fitted with DCC sound equipment. It carries the manufacturer part number ACC3469-DCC and represents the period of the initial privatisation of rail freight in the United Kingdom.

The prototype, number 66017, arrived in the UK aboard the M.V. Fairmast and was unloaded at Newport Docks on 31 Oct 1998 in the maroon and gold colours of EWS. Originally built without buckeye coupling and mirrors, these were added in 2002 and 2005 respectively. The locomotive is one of three Class 66s equipped with a tripcock for operation on the Metropolitan line and now runs for DB Cargo in the current red livery.

Accurascale has refined the model with a newly tooled exhaust silencer, revised hand‑brake linkages in the off position, an etched middle handrail bracket, and optional roof‑mounted Wi‑Fi pods, modified cab‑door handles and BMAC‑replacement lighting units. New buffer‑plate combinations expand the range of prototype variations that can be represented.

Deluxe features include a PowerPack capacitor for uninterrupted power, customised dual‑speaker technology with a large bass speaker and a smaller high‑frequency cube, and a hall sensor for flange‑squeal effects (on DCC Sound‑fitted units). The model is DCC ready via a 21‑pin MTX socket or can be fitted with an ESU LokSound 5 decoder. Traction is provided by a five‑pole motor with two flywheels, geared for a minimum scale top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) and equipped with all‑wheel drive and pickup. Lighting is fully detailed with directional DC/DCC operation, switchable red and white marker lights with day/night settings, and separately switched cab lighting that auto‑turns off on movement.
