Manufacturer description
PROTOTYPE

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

Dapol 7 Plank Twin Pack – Buckley Junction 22 & Gresford, Wrexham 222 is a model railway set in OO gauge. The wagons are presented in a pristine finish and carry the Buckley Junction and Gresford liveries. They are built to a minimum radius of curve 1 and are supplied by various companies under the manufacturer part number 4F‑071‑162. The model represents the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and is classified as a prototype.

The original 12‑ton 7‑plank coal wagons were designed to the 1923 RCH standard and were widely used for coal distribution across the United Kingdom until they were replaced by larger steel hoppers in the late 1940s. Many were owned privately by collieries, coal agents and merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries.

The Dapol model reproduces the 1923 RCH wagon with a highly detailed, finely moulded body, profiled wheels and a realistic coal load. The livery is accurately applied to match the historic Buckley Junction and Gresford colours.
