Manufacturer description

Up until the 1970s coal was the predominant fuel of the UK and the demand was met by a multitude of coal mines spread all over the country. Rail was the principal means of distributing the coal and the 1923 RCH standard design of 12 ton 7 plank wagons with opening end doors were used widely for this purpose until superseded by the larger steel bodied hoppers in the late 1940s.

Many 7 plank wagons were privately owned, either by the mines themselves (the larger mines may have owned hundreds), the coal agents who acted as middlemen between the mines and the merchants and the individual coal merchants themselves. There was therefore a vast collection of liveries either specifically manufactured for larger fleets, or wagons were overprinted as was seen for many of the smaller merchants. Such was the volumes of coal moved in this period that rakes of 150 wagons or more were commonly seen leaving collieries destined for marshalling yards where the coal was organised for regional delivery.

The Dapol United 7‑plank wagon (product number 4F‑071‑142) is an OO‑scale model representing the 1923 RCH standard 12‑ton coal wagon. It measures 82 mm in length over the buffers, 33 mm wide and 35 mm high, and comes in a pristine finish with United livery. The wagon uses NEM and tension‑lock couplings, is capable of negotiating a minimum radius of 1, and is built by various companies for Dapol.

Historically, 7‑plank wagons with opening end doors were the principal means of transporting coal across the UK from the early 1920s until they were superseded by larger steel‑bodied hoppers in the late 1940s. They were owned by coal mines, agents and merchants, resulting in a wide variety of liveries and often over‑printing for smaller operators. Rakes of 150 wagons or more were common when moving coal from collieries to regional marshalling yards.

The model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, a finely moulded body, an accurately applied United livery and a realistic coal load. It is suitable for inclusion in a collection representing the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
